Pro Model & Talent, Barbizon of Akron, OH. Rip Off or No?
I went in for the "new faces" group meeting a while ago, and got an instant call-back. The next day I went back, and sat in a small room with one of their representatives and my Mother. They made it seem like I was great, and perfect- Except that I needed to pay $1,395 for Barbizon of Akron, and atleast $400 upfront. A little fishy to me. We called BBB and apparently Barbizon and Pro Model are one in the same. I'm thinking that Pro Model gets their money from the $1,395 that we have to pay for the Barbizon school, and misleading us saying that they get the money from the work they provide us with. This is just a hunch. They say that after the 15 week class, I get to immediately sign with the Agency. I've also heard that any Agency that makes you take classes before signing, isn't legit. I'm about to go to the meeting where I put the $400 down, but I'm skeptical. Has anyone done this? Is this really a rip off? Help, I want to keep my money!!!!!

I wouldn't bother with any "agency" that forces you to take classes beforehand. If you were signed by a top agency like Ford or Elite they'd never make you pay for classes. The agency hires coaches to work with you one-on-one -that's why they take a commission to cover these sorts of investments in your career The reality is, there aren't going to be enough modeling jobs in a secondary city like Akron to support an agency through commission only. The only way these agencies can exist is to charge people for classes. Before you pay even $1 ask who their Top 5 models are and what they've booked them on in the past 6 months. If they won't show you then walk out - it means they aren't booking models on many jobs. Any legitimate agency would have no problem showing you their books and examples of work they've recently booked their talent on.
